Week of 9/30 - Bills, bills, bills
Do you remember how a bill becomes a law?
(Schoolhouse Rock, anyone?)
Well a bill is on its way to becoming a law in New Jersey.
I’ve been working for many years with nonprofits that are trying to change New Jersey law to allow community gardens to compost small amounts of food waste from the community without prohibitively expensive permits.
And yesterday the New Jersey Assembly Environment and Solid Waste Committee advanced a bill to fo just that.
It was such a proud moment for me, even though its not a law yet, because I had a hand in it, and it will make New Jersey and the world a better place.
Check out the legislation here!
This moment also exemplifies my belief that we can make a difference while simultaneously advancing our careers in private practice.
Did I lose you?
Wondering how this also advances my career?
I’ve made so many connections while working on this project, and they are very meaningful connections because we’re all working together to make the world better. I’m talking about regulators, legislators, private industry, other lawyers, journalists.
I’ve also gotten a lot of recognition through articles and awards.
I’ve started working with clients who came to me (or were referred to me) because they heard about my work on this issue.
But perhaps most importantly, I believe in myself because of this project and others. I beleive that I can build a planet-friendly legal practice.
And to me that means always having a project like this (although this one is special) to support while I grow the other areas of my practice.
And for those of you thinking, but you aren’t allowed to benefit from good deeds. No. You are allowed to do good things and also use them to your benefit. You might seem squeamish about doing that initially, but the more your career takes off, the more you’ll be able to do good things. So it’s a virtuous circle.
Here’s to doing good.
And if you need to find a project like this, read my article on pro bono here.
Now onto this weeks opportunities.
