Week of 9/16 - Career GPS?
I had to use GPS to get to work today.
Literally.
As of this morning, I am now a Principal at Offit Kurman and the Chair of its Environmental and Sustainability Practice Group. So I plugged in my new office into my Google Maps, and followed the directions.
For those of you who don't know, Offit Kurman is an AMLAW 200 law firm and one of the fastest-growing full-service law firms in the United States.
This is a dream job for me, and I almost can’t believe it.
Check me out here!
But I also needed a figurative GPS…
I only know that this is the right job for me because I took time to get clear on what I wanted, and didn’t want.
I’ll be honest, after endless brainstorming and many pro/con lists, I have more clarity about my career but I’m still figuring it out as I go along. And that’s okay too.
So how did I figure out what I wanted?
I asked myself lots of questions, like:
What really lights me up at work?
When do I feel most alive and happy?
What do I find most meaningful?
When I look back at the end of a week or month or year, what am I most proud of?
What drags me down at work?
When do I feel “down” at work?
What do I find most monotonous?
What are my strongest skills?
What are my most unique skills?
What do I offer that nobody else does?
How would my colleagues and friends describe me? My strengths? My weaknesses? My dreams?
The questions you ask yourself don’t really matter, just keep investigating and look for recurring themes.
For instance, I learned that I love variety; I want to be assisting a solar development one minute, and doing pro bono work for a community garden the next, before turning to write emails on behalf of a recycling facility to wrap things up. The demands of changing gears makes me feel alive and engaged.
I also learned that i love to have autonomy and to inspire others to find their own path to personal responsibility. I want to run my cases and my practice and be able to pivot and experiment and slow down and speed up.
And I want to keep working on all things sustainability, doing innovative work, for businesses and nonprofits. Because I believe (and am fed by) doing work that type of work.
So while I’m constantly evaluating my career and refining my GPS, I know just what an amazing opportunity I have at Offit Kurman.
Thank you to everyone who has believed in my journey and helped me take this leap!
Before we turn to this weeks opportunities, we have a special announcement! We have our first, semi-exclusive job posting!

Well, turns out they are looking for an in-house counsel to help scale their decarbonization platform. Very diverse work (offtake agreements, O&M, leases financing, the gamut). (A lot of really talented and friendly people work there as well.)
