Week of 7/7 - Don't Network...
Welcome to the planetary lawyer project, a newsletter for lawyers that want to do more for the planet.
Don’t network, find a community…
You don’t need to network.
Not in the traditional sense.
You don’t have to go to conferences and events and talk to random strangers. (Unless that’s your vibe, then go for it!)
You have other choices.
My favorite alternative is to find a community. Find a place where you belong. When you belong to a community, you have a baseline of trust and understanding that makes real connection possible. I’ve found that people within communities will really go the extra mile to help other members of the community.
Aren’t you more likely to help a law school class mate, or a neighbor, or someone that is part of your “tribe.”
But how do you find your tribe? There are many ways. Planetary lawyers might search out groups that are working on climate solutions. Like the SoapBox Project or Work on Climate. I’m part of both communities and find them quite rewarding.
You should also feel free to think more broadly. Interested in impact investing? Look up angel investment groups. Interested in natural resources? Look up hiking and foraging groups or conservation groups.
You don’t need to be limited to the environment though, you’re a whole person. Interested in fitness? Join a gym or studio that focuses on community. Interested in art. I’m sure there’s something for that too.
It’s a big wide world out there. Stop networking and find your community.
Now onto this week's opportunities.
DO GOOD
Pro bono projects are excellent opportunities for you to learn new skills and meet new people, all while doing more for the planet.
If you’re interested in regenerative agriculture and integrated landscape management, and you can do some contracting and/or corporate work, feel free to reach out and I might be able connect you with a project.
Know a pro bono project that needs assistance? Submit it here.
DO WELL
Job opportunities with planet-aligned employers allow you to get paid to do more for the planet. From certified B corporations to NGOs to companies with real impact, there are lots of ways to work for the planet.
