Week of 6/3 - How to get big climate clients through LinkedIn
What does LinkedIn have to do with building a climate-friendly legal practice?
Well, I owe my book of climate-friendly clients to LinkedIn, and I firmly believe that LinkedIn allows me to build my practice in the most efficient and climate-conscious way.
While I use a variety of strategies to land clients, LinkedIn is the glue that holds everything together and keeps me top of mind.
What types of clients have I landed through LinkdedIn?
I’m talking about billion dollar private equity firms, huge recycling companies, cutting edge startups.
And I’ve gotten more speaking and writing opportunities than I can count through LinkedIn.
But how is it climate-conscious?
Well, I’m able to market to a lot of people at once and do not need to travel to conferences or go to events to do so, although I still do some of that and it can be helpful to “close” new relationships.
Because LinkedIn is a “social” network, you need to figure out how to make it work for you.
Are you funny? Are you academic? Are you personal? Think about your personality and find a style that fits you.
For today, I want to focus on one very important and often overlooked element of your LinkedIn presence is your “headline.” It’s the 120 characters that show up underneath your name on your profile and on posts and comments. It’s how you introduce yourself to the world, and it is so important to getting noticed on LinkedIn.
Many people just blandly recite their current role, because that is the default.
Please don’t do that…
I’ve tried a lot of different combinations, and I’ll be updating my current headline soon. I just think I can do better, and I’m always experimenting.
Your headline should grab the audience's attention and provide a clear value proposition. Who are you? What do you do? Who do you do it for? What makes you unique? What significant experiences/recognitions have you had?
Here are some good examples that I like:
Tanya Nesbitt - Navigating Regulatory Chaos For Businesses with Environmental Issues So They Can Take Back Control
J. Michael Showalter - Environmental Litigator Specializing in Resolution of Complex Claims
Jose Almanzar - Environmental Attorney Providing Solutions to Businesses, Non-Profits and Municipalities | Environmental Justice Advocate | Public Speaker & Author | Dominicano y Americano Soy 🇩🇴 🇺🇸
Christine Uri - Chief Legal Officer | Chief Sustainability Officer | Content Creator - Helping in-house counsel build successful ESG programs
So what about you? Share your headline below to introduce yourself!
By the way, two of these examples also use another little known LinkedIn trick. Post it below if you catch it!
