I get to represent climate-conscious companies that are making a difference for the planet.
But I can feel like a fraud sometimes because I also represent more typical businesses, such as real estate developers and insurance companies.
Lawyers come to me to find out how to do more climate-friendly legal work, and often they want to do what I do, thinking that I spend every day saving the planet (partly because social media only tells part of the story).
The truth though is that about 50-60% of my work is climate-focused.
When I started my journey towards becoming a planetary lawyer many years ago, I didn’t do any planet-friendly legal work.
Over time, I slowly increased the percentage of work I did for companies and projects that champion climate interests.
And I mean slowly….
Year 1: 1% planet-friendly legal work (and all pro bono)
Year 2: 3% planet-friendly legal work (mostly pro bono)
Year 3: 10% planet-friendly legal work (half pro bono)
Year 4: 20% planet-friendly legal work (only a little pro bono)
. . .
. . .
. . .
Today: 50-60% planet-friendly legal work (but still committed to pro bono)
I’m thankful that I get to do that much, and I want others to know that combining climate work with traditional work is a good thing!
In fact, I’m not sure if I’ll ever reach 100% climate work or if that’s even a goal for me.
Why not?
Because I am not just one thing; and because I value diversity and stability in my career.
I enjoy counseling real estate developers on complicated environmental transactions, and I feel really good at it. I enjoy solving problems for businesses in general.
So I’m also still pursuing traditional legal work, because I’ve decided that having a diverse group of clients will help me to advance my career and do more planet-friendly work overall. Industries go through cycles, and I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. I also want to have the comfort and stability to pursue interesting projects that might not be as economically lucrative. So it’s all in service of my greater goal, a balanced career that benefits me and the planet.
I struggle with this decision sometimes, in part because the environmental sphere tends to support purity over all else, but also because I hold myself to a high standard and am trying to set an example for others.
But, I know that I became a planetary lawyer when I intentionally took on my first climate-conscious client.
So the example that I would like to set is to be true to yourself and your goals.
You don’t need to do 100% climate-conscious work to make a difference.
1% makes a difference.
If you struggle with this question too, I would love to hear from you!
Next newsletter I’ll share another tip to help you build your climate career.
But for now…
Now onto this weeks opportunities.
