Week of 10/14 - Is the planet hiring?

Do you dream of working as in-house counsel at a company that is making a difference for the planet?

Every other week, I share opportunities for all kinds of lawyers to do just that.

But where can you find more jobs on your own?

1. Search for specific keywords on generic, legal job boards. You should start by searching generic, legal job boards for postings. Use GoInHouse or LinkedIn Jobs (sorted for legal jobs). Because there are so many openings on these sites, you need to narrow them down with keywords. Use keywords that are based on industries you are interested in (such as solar, recycling, agriculture) as well as topic (such as sustainability and environmental justice) and company information (such as benefit corp or social impact enterprise). Each of these keywords will show you different types of jobs that allow you to help the environment!

2. Search for legal jobs on planet-friendly job boards. This is easier, because you don’t have to use keywords, but there are fewer jobs on these niche job boards. Use BWork (B Labs job board) or Idealist. Just sort by legal jobs and you’ll have a neat list of openings.

3. Network, network, network. The bad news though is that 70% of all jobs are not published publicly on job boards. But this is actually good news for you. Because if you know where you want to work, you can develop relationships in that industry or at that company, and you can get a job without having to compete with everyone who sees the job online. I’ve heard of several jobs through word of mouth that ended up appearing in this newsletter. So talk to your friends and your networks, join Work on Climate, post on LinkedIn.
