Help break a world record for climate!
How many lawyers does it take to break a Guinness World Record?
Hi! I’m Matthew Karmel, founder of the planetary lawyer project and Chair of the Environmental and Sustainability Law Group at Offit Kurman. (Any views expressed are my own. Nothing here is legal advice.)
I started my career as an associate with a single pro bono climate client and am now the head of a cutting edge climate-focused practice group at a full-service AMLaw 200 law firm.
I started this newsletter to help you build your own climate-friendly legal career by sharing hard-won lessons from my own career, short interviews with other climate-focused lawyers, legal developments, and relevant job opportunities.
How many lawyers does it take to break a Guinness World Record?
No, this isn't a bad lawyer joke; it's a reason for climate optimism.
We’re going to try and break a Guinness World Record by…
…bringing together the most lawyers EVER for a virtual conference.
And, we’re going to teach those lawyers how to do climate-related pro bono.
________
________
Let’s back up and start at the beginning.
We launched the first Climate Pro Bono Bootcamp in January 2024.
It was a resounding success!
We had 700 lawyers from across the world learning the nuts and bolts of climate pro bono from 10+ leading lawyers.
The panels covered climate issues in IP, corporate, advocacy, and more, and showed lawyers how to use these skills to help climate startups and nonprofits.
We’re planning for our second Climate Pro Bono Bootcamp in April 2025.
(To be exact, it will be hosted virtually on April 22 and 23, 2025.)
It's going to be bigger.
It has to be bigger...
...because we need more lawyers doing climate pro bono right now!
As we began our planning for this year’s virtual conference, we stumbled upon a Guinness World Record for “largest attendance for a virtual law conference in one week.”
Turns out in the midst of the pandemic someone hosted a virtual conference that drew 66,732 people.
We want to break this record with the 2025 Climate Pro Bono Bootcamp!
It may seem ambitious to go from 700 lawyers in 2024 to more than 66,000 lawyers in 2025.
But we’re going to try for it anyway.
And we’re bringing together some incredible content to help you do more climate pro bono.
We’re going to have panels on how to:
push back on executive orders that attack climate policy
find impact litigation that is accessible to all lawyers
support local government climate initiatives
help nonprofits collaborate on a bigger scale
embed climate clauses in contracts for small businesses
and so much more
We’re going to have day one focus on litigation and advocacy topics, and day 2 focus on transactions and non profit topics.
While we had 4 hours of content in 2024, we’ve got 9 hours of content planned for 2025.
You’ll hear from heavy hitters in the climate space, including panelists from:
Environmental Defense Fund
Pro Bono Institute
Stanford Law School
Columbia Law School
and more
So, with all of this firepower in one place, we’re going to try and break the record.
In fact, we want 70 thousand lawyers to join us..
If you think about it, that should be easy to accomplish.
As of January 1, 2024, there were 1,322,649 lawyers in the United States.
We only need 5% of US lawyers to show up to beat the record.
(And that doesn’t even count the 116,851 US law students or other lawyers and law students from across the world!)
In breaking the record, we’ll bring attention to climate in a huge way, while also teaching lawyers that it is possible for everyone to work on climate through pro bono.
Think of the impact of this event!
______________
______________
So, will you help us? Will you be part of the 70 thousand lawyers making the world a better place?
